WhatsApp for iOS is testing a new feature that leverages augmented reality (AR), according to claims by a feature tracker. This update introduces AR capabilities for video calls, allowing users to customize elements such as lighting conditions and surroundings. The feature, available via a beta update, is also said to include touch-up filters that can tweak appearances in real-time and a dedicated low-light mode.

Upcoming Features and Enhancements

According to WABetaInfo, AR support was first spotted on WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.16.7 in July. It has now arrived on its iOS counterpart, following the reported rollout of WhatsApp beta for iOS version 24.15.10.70 via the TestFlight program.

As per shared screenshots, WhatsApp's new AR capabilities include dynamic facial filters. Users can tweak their video feed's overall color tone and utilize a background editing tool to blur or change their background with presets.

The WhatsApp for iOS beta update also features two dedicated modes: touch-up and low-light. The former adds a facial filter that removes blemishes, reminiscent of face beauty filters on smartphones, while the latter enhances visibility in low-light environments. This new functionality is still in development, and only beta testers registered via Apple's TestFlight can access it.

In addition to AR capabilities, WhatsApp has also introduced GIPHY-powered stickers, allowing users to search for stickers without leaving the app. The custom sticker maker previously available on iOS has now reached Android, while Meta AI is available to help users create their own stickers.
