Trai Directs Migration of Spam Calls to Blockchain Platform to Combat Telemarketing
Spam Calls and Blockchain Integration
In a landmark move, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has directed telecom operators to migrate telemarketing calls that begin with the 140 series to a blockchain-based distributed ledger technology (DLT) platform by September 30. This initiative aims to significantly curb spam and enhance the traceability of messages.
Regulatory Measures to Combat Spam
- Trai has introduced punitive measures to prevent the misuse of headers and templates for promotional content.
- From November 1, 2024, all messages must have a traceable pathway from senders to recipients.
- Messages with undefined or mismatched telemarketer chains will be rejected.
Accountability and Compliance
In response to observed misuse, Trai mandates immediate suspension of traffic from any sender found misusing headers or content templates. The directions state that revocation of traffic will follow legal action against misuse. Furthermore, delivery telemarketers will need to identify responsible entities for such violations promptly.
Your Responsibilities as a Business
- Register as a principal entity on the DLT platform.
- Ensure messaging follows the new compliance guidelines effective September 1, 2024.
- All messages sent must not contain unverified URLs or links.
