Innovative Mapping of Chemical Industrial Parks in the Yangtze River Region

Saturday, 3 August 2024, 13:47

This study presents a groundbreaking approach to mapping chemical industrial parks (CIPs) along the Yangtze River using random forest and active learning techniques. It successfully produces a distribution map at a 10-meter resolution, harnessing Sentinel-2 imagery and a multidimensional feature space. With a model accuracy of 80%, this timely and cost-effective method not only replaces traditional survey techniques but also serves as the first publicly available CIPs map within a 5-km range, providing essential data for pollution governance in the area.

Introduction

Strengthening industrial pollution control in the Yangtze River is a fundamental national policy of China. This study highlights the lack of detailed distribution of chemical industrial parks (CIPs).

Methodology

  • Random Forest (RF) and Active Learning techniques used to generate the distribution map.
  • Map achieved at 10-meter resolution using Sentinel-2 imagery.
  • Construction of a multidimensional feature space based on spectral and texture features.

Results

The classification of CIPs map was successfully executed on Google Earth Engine (GEE), showing a model accuracy of 80%. This technical validation along the entire Yangtze River demonstrates significant improvement over traditional methods.

Conclusion

As the first publicly available CIPs map within a 5-km range along the Yangtze River, this research provides a scientific basis for the fine governance of chemical industries in the region. Additionally, it offers a model guide for accurate identification of the chemical industry.
