PM Modi Engages with Tata Sons and PSMC to Propel Semiconductor Manufacturing Innovation
Transforming Semiconductor Manufacturing in India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met with the leadership team of Tata Sons and Taiwan-based Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC). The discussion focused on updates regarding semiconductor manufacturing projects in India. PSMC expressed enthusiasm to further expand its footprint in India. In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi shared, 'Had a great meeting with the leadership team of Tata Sons and PSMC.'
Significant Developments in the Semiconductor Sector
The Government of India recently approved a proposal from Tata Electronics to build a mega semiconductor fabrication facility (Fab) in Dholera, Gujarat, in partnership with PSMC. This facility, with a total investment of up to Rs 91,000 crores (approximately USD 11 billion), is poised to generate over 20,000 direct and indirect skilled jobs in the region. This strategic alliance marks Tata Electronics' entry into the global semiconductor industry.
- Tata Electronics, under Tata Sons Pvt Ltd, is collaborating with PSMC to construct India's first AI-enabled state-of-the-art Fab.
- This facility will have a manufacturing capacity of up to 50,000 wafers per month.
- The integration of next-generation factory automation capabilities employing data analytics and machine learning aims to achieve industry-best factory efficiency.
The new semiconductor Fab will focus on manufacturing chips for power management ICs, display drivers, microcontrollers (MCU), and high-performance computing logic, meeting the escalating demand in markets like automotive, computing, data storage, wireless communication, and artificial intelligence.
