Significant Launch of Three PARAM Rudra Supercomputers

On Thursday, PM Modi dedicated three PARAM Rudra supercomputers worth around ₹130 crore to the nation via video conferencing. Developed indigenously under the National Supercomputing Mission, these supercomputers have been strategically deployed in Pune, Delhi, and Kolkata to facilitate pioneering scientific research.

Applications Across Various Scientific Fields

  • Giant Metre Radio Telescope (GMRT) in Pune will utilize the supercomputer to explore Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs).
  • The Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC) in Delhi aims to enhance research in material science and atomic physics.
  • The S.N. Bose Centre in Kolkata will drive advanced research in physics, cosmology, and earth sciences.

The Future of AI and Machine Learning in India

Prime Minister Modi emphasized that India’s ability to build supercomputers is a matter of national pride, stating that these advancements will benefit common citizens and create significant changes in the future. He highlighted the vital role supercomputers will play in the era of AI and machine learning.

Investment in High-Performance Computing Systems

Additionally, PM Modi inaugurated a High-Performance Computing (HPC) system named ‘Arka’ and ‘Arunika’, specifically tailored for weather and climate research.

  1. This project comes with a hefty investment of ₹850 crore, marking a significant leap in India's computational capabilities for meteorological applications.
  2. Located at the key sites of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune and the National Center for Medium Range Weather Forecast (NCMRWF) in Noida, these HPC systems boast extraordinary computing power.

Enhancements in Weather Prediction Accuracy

The models 'Arka' and 'Arunika' will significantly enhance the accuracy and lead time of predictions related to tropical cyclones, heavy precipitation, thunderstorms, hailstorms, heat waves, droughts, and other critical weather phenomena.
