The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released reports indicating that the Boar’s Head Plant in Virginia was identified as posing an "imminent threat" two years before the deadly listeria outbreak occurred. Shortly after the outbreak's emergence in Jarratt, VA, the USDA disclosed two rounds of inspection reports that pinpointed critical health violations.

Inspection Findings

The inspection documents covered a period from August 2023 to August 2024 and also included records dating back to 2022. The New York Times revealed concerning details from these inspections: equipment was rusted, product buildup existed, condensation was dripping onto the floor, and there was evidence of green mold on the walls. In fall 2022, inspectors reported live beetles in the plant's hallways, among other significant violations.
