Visakhapatnam's Groundbreaking Initiative: First Global MedTech University
Visakhapatnam Welcomes First Medical Technology University
Visakhapatnam: The Andhra Pradesh Medical Technology Zone (AMTZ) is set to establish a greenfield ‘Global MedTech University,’ the first of its kind in the country, on its premises. AMTZ aims to collaborate with industry players in a public-private partnership model, with operations slated to commence in the 2025-26 academic year.
Comprehensive Academic Programmes
The university will offer a range of academic programmes related to medical technology and regulatory affairs, including:
- MBA in medical regulatory approvals and entrepreneurship
- MTech in medical technology devices
- MTech in bioengineering
- PhD courses
With around 140 companies located in the MedTech Zone, students will benefit from hands-on training within the campus, guided by industry experts who double as faculty and potential recruiters.
Addressing Workforce Gaps
According to Prof Hanumanthu Purushotham, the founding director, a significant portion of India’s medical equipment demand is met through imports due to a lack of educational avenues. The university aims to bridge this gap by addressing the manpower requirements of the medical technology device industry.
“This first-of-its-kind institute will directly address the unique requirements of the industry, ensuring students receive relevant training,” said Prof Purushotham. The courses offered will provide a distinct advantage to aspiring students, aligning their education with industry needs.
International Collaborations and Future Prospects
The university will collaborate with leading international institutions to enhance its technological capabilities and provide evolving learning experiences in medical technology. Specific admission criteria and details will be finalized soon, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for their future careers.
