PGI Launches Groundbreaking Preventive Cardiology Clinic

Chandigarh: In a significant step towards tackling cardiovascular diseases, PGI has launched North India’s first government-operated preventive cardiology clinic. This initiative aims to focus on heart disease prevention through a proactive approach to healthcare.

Comprehensive Evaluations and Personalized Interventions

The clinic is set to operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays, providing tailored evaluations for health-conscious adults aiming to mitigate cardiac risks. PGI director Prof Vivek Lal states, “By focusing on weight management, physical activity, and practices like yoga, we can prevent many lifestyle diseases.”

Addressing the Critical Need for Preventive Care

Dr Neelam, the clinic's overseeing associate professor, highlights that around 80% of non-communicable diseases can be prevented through lifestyle choices. The multidisciplinary team will conduct screenings for patients' relatives attending the clinic, acknowledging that heart diseases can be hereditary.

  • Psychosocial assessment by a psychiatrist
  • Dietary guidance from registered dieticians

Dr Krishan from psychiatry emphasizes that both stress and psychological factors significantly impact heart health. The clinic’s holistic approach will educate patients and caregivers with informative booklets on prevention methods, promoting lifestyle changes conducive to heart health.

Creating a Supportive Environment for Health

The clinic plans to host activities like yoga sessions to engender a supportive community for individuals at risk. Dr Neelam explains, “We will screen these patients and guide them based on parameters, helping them stay motivated and informed.”
