New Mental Health Telehealth Program in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — As a pioneering initiative, Rhode Island is set to become the first state on the East Coast to roll out a virtual telehealth service aimed specifically at expanding mental health support for K-12 students. In partnership with Hazel Health, a leader in virtual health care for children, state and school officials announced the beginning of this much-needed program.

Significance of the Initiative

This program emerges amid a growing mental health crisis affecting students nationwide. According to Dr. Travis Gayles, Chief Medical Officer at Hazel Health, over 75% of students utilizing these telehealth services demonstrated significant improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms within just four to six sessions.

Accessible Services for Students

  • Available to over 130,000 students aged eight and above
  • No out-of-pocket costs, irrespective of insurance
  • Connect with professionals through secure video consultations
  • Access to medical advice, over-the-counter treatments, and therapy referrals

This initiative not only aims to provide timely and effective support but also to break down barriers to learning by addressing mental health directly. Scheduled for launch by the end of the year, the program is complementary to existing mental health services, ensuring that students thrive academically while improving their mental well-being.
