Importance of Food Labelling in Promoting Health and Preventing Disease
Link Between Ultra-Processed Foods and Non-Communicable Diseases
The adverse health impact of excessive dependence on ultra-processed foods (UPFs) which are generally calorie-dense but nutrient-poor has already been studied. The WHO along with several other credible organisations have already documented the negative impact of UPFs contributing to the steady rise in obesity, diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, among others.
The Need for Transparent Food Labelling
Transparent food labelling is a powerful approach to enable consumers to make healthier choices. However, the current standards of food labelling in India leave a lot of room for improvement. The other information, such as added ingredients and nutritional value, was often overlooked because it was not displayed properly or due to unclear language.
