Managed Care Premiums Surge: Insights for Healthcare Executives in 2024

This year, managed care premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance uptick by 7%, consistent with the increase noted in 2023, as highlighted by the KFF Employer Health Benefits Survey.

The survey reveals that family coverage premiums rose by 7%, while single coverage increased by 6%. For healthcare executives and health systems, these shifts have substantial bearings on both employee costs and overall health plan management.

Over a five-year span, premiums have escalated 24%, approximately aligning with inflation (23%) and wage growth (24%). However, with only a 5% rise in employee premium contributions, this gives a comparatively manageable outlook for staff.

As of 2024, the average employee costs for premiums amount to $1,368 for single coverage and $6,296 for family coverage. Health plans must now tackle rising deductibles, with 32% of covered workers facing annual deductibles of $2,000 or more, a sizeable leap from the previous decade.

The KFF findings also reveal the complexities surrounding coverage for GLP-1 agonists, and the debate over abortion coverage in large firms poses further challenges for healthcare executives and health systems.
