AIIMS Bhopal: Multidisciplinary Surgical Intervention Restores Eyesight

Bhopal: A procedure at AIIMS Bhopal successfully restored vision to a 25-year-old patient from Jaitwara village who suffered a traumatic accident on August 20. The patient had experienced complete loss of vision in both eyes, along with displacement of the left eyeball into the ethmoid sinus.

After being referred to AIIMS Bhopal on August 26, emergency scanning revealed complications, including pneumocephalus, necessitating a multidisciplinary surgical intervention. This complex scenario required collaboration among neurosurgery, ophthalmology, trauma, emergency medicine, and anesthesia specialists.

The patient's condition, marked by severe headaches and nasal discharge, rapidly deteriorated. Initially, the family believed the left eye had fallen out; however, further evaluations confirmed it was trapped within the ethmoid sinus, with air intruding into the brain.

Such intricate cases demand cohesive teamwork, as evidenced by the dedicated efforts of Dr. Amit Agarwal in neurosurgery, Dr. Bhavana Sharma in ophthalmology, Dr. B. L. Soni in maxillofacial surgery, and Dr. Vaishali Vendeskar in anesthesia.
