Maharashtra Medical Colleges Introduce New Government Medical Colleges

Maharashtra Medical Colleges are poised to add 800 new seats with the establishment of eight new Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) for the academic year 2024-25. The Central Government's Health and Family Welfare Department has issued orders approving these seats in response to the state’s appeal. The new GMCs will be established in Gadchiroli, Amravati, Washim, Jalna, Buldana, Ambernath, Bhandara, and Hingoli districts.

Impact of NMC Approvals

This significant development addresses a previous shortfall where only two out of ten GMCs were approved earlier this year, providing just 100 seats. The government’s latest decision also increases the total number of seats in government medical colleges in Maharashtra to 4,850, spread across 35 districts.

Challenges and Recruitment Efforts

Despite these approvals, none of the new colleges meet the required faculty provisions: 88 teaching staff per 100 students. However, ongoing recruitment initiatives are underway to address this gap. The Maharashtra CET Cell is currently facing delays, adding to concerns about enrollment. Maharashtra's Medical Education Minister has confirmed that substantial financial support for infrastructure, totaling Rs 403 crore, will be allocated to each college.
