Government Approval for New Medical Colleges

The Union Ministry of Health has approved the addition of 800 MBBS seats in Maharashtra medical colleges this year. These seats will be distributed across eight new government colleges located in various districts, including Ambernath, Gadchiroli, and Amravati.

Details of the New Colleges

These newly approved colleges will each have a capacity of 100 seats, contributing significantly to the growing list of medical institutions in the state. The total number of government and government-aided colleges in Maharashtra now reaches 41, providing ample opportunities for aspiring medical students.

Impact of Additional MBBS Seats

  • The addition of these seats will boost the chances for applicants during the ongoing admission process.
  • This decision marks the second substantial increase in MBBS seats in government colleges in recent years.
  • In 2019, approximately 950 seats were added following the introduction of the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) quota.

However, challenges remain as many of these institutions struggle to meet the Minimum Standard Requirements (MSR) set by the National Medical Commission (NMC) in 2020, particularly in terms of faculty and infrastructure.
