Goa News Today: Expansion of MBBS Seat Capacity at GMC for 2024-25
Goa News Overview
Panaji: With the National Medical Commission permitting GMC to increase its first-year MBBS seat capacity to 200 for the 2024-25 academic year, the additional seats will be offered at the second admission round for NEET-based courses. The intake will take place at the Directorate of Technical Education from Sep 16 to 18.
“The GMC intake has gone up from 180 to 200. Of these 20 seats, 17 will be available to Goa students and three to students under the All-India Quota,” an official said.
Impact on Students
The additional seats will help students who want the MBBS degree but were earlier forced to join the dental programme because of seat paucity, the official said. Consequently, 20 students on the dental programme wait-list may find a place.
This year, about 3,000 applied in Goa to NEET-based courses. During the second round of admissions, 100 ayurveda seats will also be offered for the first time, from Monday. These seats were unavailable in the first round as stipulated by the centrally released schedule.
For the academic year 2019-20, the GMC was first permitted to increase its MBBS seats from 150 to 180. It is the lone and coveted medical college in the state. Moreover, GMC can now raise its MD (radiodiagnosis) seat capacity from six to seven; MS (general surgery) from six to 15; MS (obstetrics and gynaecology) from six to eight; MD (pharmacology) from four to six; and MD (paediatrics) from seven to 10.
