Baltimore's health disparities are a significant concern, and Morgan State University has received a $20 million federal grant to enhance its biomedical research center. The RCMI at Morgan focuses on chronic conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, HIV, and COVID, that disproportionately affect minority groups, particularly those in urban Baltimore. Announced today, this $20.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will fund research for an additional five years, including necessary laboratory technology upgrades and support for junior investigators' career development.

The RCMI program was launched in 2019 with an initial $14.2 million grant from the NIH's division for Minority Health and Health Disparities. The center's research into chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, asthma, and cancer has led to the development of new prevention and treatment strategies, showcasing a dedicated effort to mitigate health disparities in the community.

Principal investigator and executive director of RCMI, Paul B. Tchounwou, expressed optimism about the new funding, emphasizing its critical role in advancing health outcomes for minority populations.
