Salmonella Outbreak Triggers Egg Recall

Due to a salmonella warning, two brands of eggs are being recalled across Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Friday that eggs from Milo's Poultry Farms and Tony's Fresh Market were found to be possibly contaminated with salmonella. This was determined after testing of environmental samples at the packing facility in Wisconsin revealed the bacteria.

Health Risks Associated with Salmonella

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, consuming contaminated food can lead to salmonellosis, showing symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever which may develop within six hours to six days after consumption. Children under 5 and adults over 65, alongside individuals with weakened immune systems, are at a heightened risk for severe cases.

  • Recall includes:
  • All carton sizes of eggs labeled Milo's Poultry Farms
  • All carton sizes of eggs branded Tony's Fresh Market
  • All cases of eggs for retail food service distribution

The FDA has indicated that the recall encompasses all expiration dates. As a response, Milo's Poultry Farms has halted production and distribution of the potentially contaminated products.

Ongoing Investigation and Guidance

The ongoing salmonella outbreak has affected 65 people across nine states, including the three states where the eggs were sold. 24 individuals have been hospitalized due to this strain of salmonella but no fatalities have been reported. Consumers are advised to check their kitchens and discard any affected products.
