NMC's New Recognition for PG Courses

New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) plans to recognize post-doctoral certificate courses in medical specializations after complaints by post-graduate students. These courses, which cover areas like paediatric endocrinology and spine surgery, are currently unrecognized despite being taught in medical colleges.

Courses Offered and Recognition Process

The NMC has directed medical schools to classify these courses under categories like post-doctoral certificates, post-doctoral fellowships, and Master of Chirurgiae. The NMC's recognition of medical qualification regulations outlines how new medical qualifications will be included.

  • There are approximately 37 such courses offered across various medical colleges.
  • Students often pay between ₹15-20 lakh for clinical exposure in these skill enhancement programs.
  • Upon completion, these qualifications have not been registered previously.

Increasing Medical Education Capacity

The health ministry has been proactive in increasing the number of medical colleges and PG seats, leading to enhanced availability of healthcare professionals. An annual increase of 5.92% in PG seats is noted, with total available PG seats rising from 69,024 in 2023-24 to 73,111 in 2024-25.
