Incorporating Ayurveda Treatment into Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana
Expanding Healthcare Options through Ayurveda
The Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) is taking a revolutionary step in health by integrating ayurveda treatment packages into the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) scheme. This marks a significant milestone as traditional treatments such as ayurveda, unani, siddha, homeopathy, and naturopathy are now part of a national health safety net.
Holistic Packages for Common and Chronic Conditions
The initiative aims to provide comprehensive healthcare access through these traditional systems. The ayurvedic packages encompass a range of services, including:
- Medicines
- Treatment centers
- Wellness programs
- Operative procedures for ailments ranging from the common cold to cancer
- Coverage for non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension
As many as 170 treatment packages are poised for implementation under the AB-PMJAY scheme, ensuring options are readily available to the populace. The focus on affordability and accessibility is at the heart of this initiative.
A Seamless Integration with Health Insurance
Final discussions are underway with insurance companies to ensure the smooth inclusion of these ayurvedic packages into the AB-PMJAY scheme. The National Health Authority (NHA) has finalized the pricing of these packages, which are designed to be affordable.
Additionally, a strategic purchasing committee has been formed to finalize cost structures and facilitate efficient processes for treatments. Currently, the AB-PMJAY scheme provides cashless health insurance coverage of ₹5 lakh per family per year, focusing on secondary and tertiary care hospitalization.
Improving Access to AYUSH Medicines
Alongside the ayurvedic packages, AYUSH Minister Prataprao Jadhav has proposed establishing special medical stores at the tehsil level. These stores are akin to 'Janaushadhi Kendras' and will enhance public access to AYUSH medications. Improved availability of various herbal and traditional medicines will significantly benefit both urban and rural populations, as stated by Jadhav.
