Karnataka Minister Advocates for Expansion of NRI Quota in Medical Courses
Karnataka Requests Enhanced NRI Quota
Karnataka's Minister for Medical Education, Sharan Prakash Patil, announced that the state has formally requested the Centre to boost the quota for Non-Resident Indian (NRI) students in medical education programs. This move follows the Supreme Court's ruling on September 24, which invalidated Punjab's expanded NRI quota in undergraduate medical admissions.
Supreme Court Ruling and Its Implications
Minister Patil noted that a formal application regarding the NRI quota increase has yet to be submitted, and further decisions are pending. He responded to the Supreme Court's ruling, stating, “From what I have learned, the decision was made after the relaxation of NRI norms for admissions in Punjab and Haryana.”
Future Plans for Karnataka Medical Education
In July, the Siddaramaiah government initiated talks with the central government to approve additional MBBS seats in government medical colleges starting from the 2025-26 academic year to facilitate the introduction of an NRI quota. This strategy aims to transform colleges into self-financing institutions, reinforcing the state's medical education system.
