DOH Highlights Effectiveness of Generic Medicines and Herbal Medicine While Warning Against Counterfeits
Generic Medicines and Herbal Medicine: The Effective Alternatives
The Department of Health (DOH) recently affirmed the effectiveness of generic medicines, stating they work just as well as branded drugs, especially in the context of herbal medicine. This statement comes in alignment with the celebration of Generics Awareness Month. The agencies involved also stressed the importance of vigilance against counterfeit products circulating in the market.
Department of Health's Insights on Drug Safety
During the Generics Medicine Expo, DOH Assistant Secretary Mayleen Beltran remarked, “We have to promote that these are cost-effective and of the same quality as branded ones. The public should have nothing to worry about because these went through regulatory processes.” This assurance aims to build trust in the safety and efficacy of generic options available to consumers.
Herbal Medicine and Public Perception
Meanwhile, PITAHC director general Dr. Maria Teresa Iñigo noted that seven out of ten Filipinos already believe in the effectiveness and affordability of generic medicines. She highlighted that all herbal medicine products offered by PITAHC are thoroughly tested in collaboration with leading universities.
In conclusion, the DOH and PITAHC continue to advocate for the use of generic medicines and herbal medicine as viable healthcare options while warning consumers to be aware of the risks posed by counterfeit drugs.
