Phil Jones Discusses Mental Health and the Impact of Online Trolls
Phil Jones on Mental Health Struggles
Former Manchester United and England defender Phil Jones has opened up about the years of abuse and mental anguish he endured, shedding light on the emotional toll caused by relentless online trolling and physical injury. Jones, 32, who retired last month, revealed that the harsh criticism he faced from fans and the public was compounded by a 14-year battle with injury, particularly the severe damage to his right knee.
Addressing Online Abuse
Throughout this time, the abuse he faced on social media ignored the true extent of his struggles, both physically and mentally. He stated, “Anybody who tells you that it doesn’t [affect them] is lying.” As footballers, they often feel pressured to put on a mask.
The Impact of Physical Injury
The physical injuries made me mentally weak at times. He expressed frustration at being constantly criticized, saying, “Obviously people will ask, ‘he is always injured?’ as though they think that I wake up one day and think, ‘oh, yeah, I fancy being injured today.’”
Coping Mechanisms
Jones emphasized the need for coping strategies, explaining, “But my coping mechanism was to be silent, put my guard up, my shield up around with my really close family.” He acknowledged that his communication with friends suffered during these periods.
