Consumer Reports recently released a report highlighting unsafe levels of lead detected in various ground cinnamon products available in stores. They tested 36 types of cinnamon powder, and alarmingly, 12 were found to contain lead concentrations exceeding acceptable limits.

In an effort to protect public health, the organization initiated this testing following rising reports of lead poisoning in children traced to tainted apple puree products. Among the findings, one cinnamon variety had lead levels reaching 3.5 times above the safety threshold set by regulatory authorities.

  • Rani Brand Ground Cinnamon - 1.39 ppm
  • Zara Foods Cinnamon Powder - 1.27 ppm
  • Three Rivers Cinnamon Stick Powder - 1.26 ppm
  • Yu Yee Brand Five Spice Powder - 1.25 ppm
  • BaiLiFeng Five Spice Powder - 1.15 ppm
  • Spicy King Five Spices Powder - 1.05 ppm
  • Badi Cinnamon Powder - 1.03 ppm
  • Deep Cinnamon Powder - 1.02 ppm

Regulatory Actions and Consumer Advice

In light of these findings, Consumer Reports encourages consumers to exercise caution and avoid these contaminated products. Notably, New York's regulations set the maximum allowable lead level in spices at 1 ppm, which has triggered discussions on the need for stricter safety measures.
