PlayStation 5 Pro Launch Details

Sony's PlayStation 5 Pro midcycle upgrade, the PS5 Pro, is finally coming November 7. Lead PlayStation architect Mark Cerny revealed the console today during a brief video presentation. “Simply put, it’s the most powerful console we’ve ever built,” Cerny said of the $700 device.

A Major Upgrade in Gaming

It's been four years since the PlayStation 5's launch. Although Sony released slimmer versions of the console last year, the PS5 Pro is its first major update to this generation's hardware. It features a slightly changed look with three ridged black stripes. More importantly, it has eliminated the optical drive—a decision likely to spark controversy.

Enhanced Gaming Power

The PS5 Pro adds significant power to players' gaming experiences. The new console includes an upgraded GPU allowing for 45 percent faster gameplay rendering, along with advanced ray tracing capabilities for improved light rendering. Cerny’s video presentation showcased gameplay from titles like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Control, and The Last of Us Part 2, illustrating how games will run with greater fidelity on the new console.

New AI Features

Additionally, the PS5 Pro introduces a new AI feature called “Spectral Super Resolution,” which utilizes machine learning-based technology for super sharp image clarity, adding extraordinary detail.

Physical Media Options

Players who prefer physical media will need to purchase a disc drive separately, but the PS5 Pro is compatible with current PS5 accessories. According to CNET's early hands-on impressions, the PS5 Pro will enhance performance for 40-50 games at launch through patches, including Alan Wake 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Gran Turismo 7, and Horizon Forbidden West.
