Gaming Hardware News: PlayStation 5 Pro Launching November 7
Gaming Hardware Details of the PlayStation 5 Pro
Sony has officially revealed the long-rumored mid-generation upgrade model for the PlayStation 5. Dubbed the PlayStation 5 Pro (just like the PS4 Pro before it), the new, more powerful console will be released on Nov. 7 and cost $699.99.
The PS5 Pro is styled like previous PS5 models, except for a triple groove across its flanks. Sony says it has the same dimensions as the current PS5 models. It is only available in an all-digital version; a 4K Blu-ray disc drive would have to be bought separately.
Sony promises that the machine will run games at smoother frame rates, higher display resolutions, and with better ray-tracing than the base PS5.
New Features and Technologies
In a video presentation, PlayStation's head boffin Mark Cerny stated that the console design focused on a big three new technologies: a larger graphics processing unit, with 45% faster rendering than the base PS5; advanced ray-tracing that operates at double or triple the speeds of the current console; and an AI-driven upscaler that improves display resolution and sharpness of images.
Cerny demonstrated games running at Fidelity mode levels of detail at double the frame rate. Enhanced versions of popular titles—like The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered and Gran Turismo 7—will feature significantly improved graphics and effects.
Market Considerations
Despite the expected benefits growing from this upgrade, analysts caution that the $700 price tag may be steep for consumers. Additionally, the current state of the TV market may pose challenges for Sony in convincing PS5 owners to upgrade. However, with the anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 in 2025, the PS5 Pro might well find its ideal market positioning.
