The Beatles have been nominated for two Grammys — nearly 50 years after the band officially split up. Their final song, called Now and Then, was restored last year with the help of AI, and is now up for record of the year alongside notable artists like Beyoncé, Charlie XCX, Billie Eilish, and Taylor Swift. It’s also vying for best rock performance against Green Day, Pearl Jam, and The Black Keys.

Technology and Music Collide

Released in November 2023, Now and Then started as a demo recorded by John Lennon in the late 1970s. This recording, along with other notable demos, was shared with Lennon’s surviving bandmates in the 90s for a potential inclusion in The Beatles Anthology. However, technology of that era couldn't separate John’s vocals and piano for a clear sound.

In a remarkable turn, filmmaker Peter Jackson and his sound team utilized machine learning technology in 2021 to achieve clear instrumentals and vocals, allowing Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to finally complete the song.

While Now and Then was finished using machine learning, it adheres to the Grammy’s current rules surrounding AI work. The guidelines specify that only human creators are eligible for consideration, but works containing elements of AI material are considered in applicable categories.

It’s somewhat surreal to witness Now and Then competing against contemporary hits like Beyoncé’s Texas Hold 'Em, yet it reflects a long-awaited moment for the Beatles. Anticipation builds as fans await the outcome at the 2025 Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 2nd.
