Community Feedback on Planeswalker Cards

Magic: The Gathering fans want to see more planeswalkers in each mainline set. According to a poll put out by Magic: The Gathering head designer Mark Rosewater, most fans are not content with the current rate of planeswalker cards, and would like to see more than one with each new set release. The most popular number would be two planeswalkers in each MTG set, with 40% choosing this option. Three planeswalkers was the second most popular choice, getting 20.6% of the vote, while 14% wanted to stick with the status quo of one new planeswalker card in each release. Interestingly, 6% asked for no MTG planeswalkers at all.

History of Planeswalkers

Planeswalker cards have been around since 2007, introduced during the Lorwyn block. Representing powerful mages capable of shifting between worlds, the series has grown over the last 15 years. We would typically see a few planeswalkers each set, but the War of the Spark expansion broke this trend, introducing 36 new planeswalkers at varying rarities. However, Wizards scaled back the number of planeswalkers, aiming to limit design to one per set, focusing instead on legendary creatures.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Planeswalkers

As the community continues to emphasize the desire for more planeswalkers, it will be interesting to see how Wizards of the Coast responds. With the emphasis on evolving gameplay mechanics and card design, the call for more planeswalkers reflects not just player preferences, but also an ongoing dialogue about game strategy in Magic: The Gathering.
