Flappy Bird Makes a Comeback: What to Expect from the Revived Mobile Game

Flappy Bird's Return: New Features and Development

Flappy Bird, the delisted viral mobile game hit from a decade ago, is making a comeback. Original developer Dong Nguyen's involvement is unclear, but his name doesn't appear anywhere on the re-release's website. Instead, a new team has purchased the rights to the game and has been developing it for relaunch. The revamped Flappy Bird is set to include new characters, gameplay modes, and a progression system.

The Original Game's Impact

In the original Flappy Bird, players navigated a bird through a tricky course of green pipes reminiscent of Super Mario Bros. With just one hit before a game-over, its simple yet addictive mechanics propelled the game to the top of App Store charts.

In 2014, developer Dong Nguyen shocked fans by taking the game offline with a tweet stating, "I cannot take this anymore." Fast forward to now, and a group known as The Flappy Bird Foundation is ready to bring it back.

The Flappy Bird Foundation plans to release Flappy Bird for mobile in 2025, and possibly even sooner for browsers. They have acquired the trademark from Gametech Holdings LLC, a company based in the U.S.

What’s Next?

Alongside their announcement and new website, the Flappy Bird Foundation has also released a trailer showcasing new visuals and an additional game mode on their YouTube channel. While it's unclear how the developers will monetize this revival, compared to other mobile games, it may be a freemium model supported by ads or microtransactions.

Despite its previous success, there is speculation about whether the market still craves Flappy Bird. The mobile gaming landscape has expanded significantly since its original launch, and even moderate success could potentially allow it to exceed its former player base.
