Understanding Dr. Jaishankar's Position on Business with China

NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday stated that India is not closed to business from China, but is prudently watchful of the sectors and terms involved. “We are not closed to business from China... no one can categorically say they will avoid engagement with China. The real question lies in which sectors we choose to engage and under what terms,” he noted during the annual ambassadors’ conference of the German Foreign Office in Berlin.

Trade Scrutiny and National Security Concerns

In light of ongoing border tensions, India has tightened its scrutiny of investments from Chinese firms, citing security concerns. Jaishankar asserted, “Trade with China should not compromise national security. It is within our rights to inform businesses regarding their exposure to national security issues. These are legitimate concerns as not all entities adhere to the same regulations.”

Addressing Broader Geopolitical Issues

On the Russia-Ukraine conflict, he reiterated Prime Minister Modi's position — “this is not an era for war.” Emphasizing that resolution lies in negotiation rather than combat, he stated, “The main parties must engage at the negotiation table.” Regarding business challenges, Dr. Jaishankar acknowledged bureaucratic hurdles and called for improved facilitation in the business environment, reflecting PM Modi's commitment to enhancing ease of doing business.

Enhancing India-Germany Relations

Dr. Jaishankar appealed to Germany to show interest in the Indo-Pacific region, paralleling India's interest in German affairs. He remarked on the necessity of advancing defense cooperation as the Indian private sector expands in this field and welcomed recent air exercises between the two nations.
