Overcoming Challenges in Government Careers: My Journey at HUD

Embracing a Career in Government

My career journey began with inspiration from my retired Marine father, leading me to join the Air Force at 17. The camaraderie and global opportunities shaped my path.

Challenges Faced

  • Wartime service in Afghanistan
  • Domestic violence and trauma
  • Experiencing sexism and racism

Transitioning to civilian life, I faced many hurdles but found my place as a policy analyst at Sage Management before joining HUD in 2014.

Managing Stress in a Demanding Role

At HUD, my role as a management analyst is highly demanding. Responsibilities include overseeing IT policies and managing a team, often requiring 40-50 hours weekly. The isolation in this role, particularly during the pandemic, adds to the challenge.

Support and Self-Care

To combat stress, I pursue biweekly therapy and lead initiatives for veterans at HUD, fostering community and support. I prioritize my self-care through exercise, meditation, and maintaining personal relationships.

Advice for Aspiring Government Professionals

I highly recommend joining professional organizations for guidance. Relationships and advocacy are essential in navigating a federal career.
