Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu Pushes for Timely Opening of Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu has called for the timely opening of Hong Kong's mega stadium, the Kai Tak Sports Park, by the first quarter of 2025. This crucial sporting hub, boasting a 50,000-seat main stadium, is essential for enhancing local athletes' performance while also serving as a catalyst for economic synergies among sports, tourism, and entertainment sectors.

During a recent site visit, Lee indicated that the park was largely complete, with preparations underway for effective crowd management to promote public transport use. He stated, 'I demanded the inter-department task force ensure timely completion to strengthen Hong Kong’s strategic positioning for hosting mega events,' showcasing a commitment to local sports.

The project, with an estimated cost of HK$30 billion (approximately US$3.8 billion), is set to hold significant international events post-opening, aiming to attract global visitors and benefit the local economy.

Lee praised the local athletes' historic successes at the Paris Olympics, reinforcing the government's vision to nourish sports development. As part of the inter-department task force, key figures like Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung and Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung provide crucial oversight.
