Hong Kong Airlines Enters Long-Haul Market with Gold Coast Route
Hong Kong Airlines Resumes Long-Haul Flights
Hong Kong Airlines will resume direct flights between the city and Gold Coast in Australia from January next year, marking its first step back into the long-haul market amid an expansion of its network, including a possible return to the North American market.
Details of the Gold Coast Route
The airline announced on Thursday that flights to Gold Coast would operate seasonally from January 17 to February 15, with the four-times-a-week service running for five weeks over the Lunar New Year period. It will offer around 6,000 seats on an A330 widebody aircraft.
Statements from Leadership
Jeff Sun, the company’s chairman, stated that Hong Kong Airlines was the first local carrier to bring back the Australian route, signalling the start of its return to long-haul services. “The route launch will mark our first step back into the long-haul market as we are gradually introducing more aircraft to support the expansion of our route network,” he noted.
Additionally, Sun highlighted that they are actively exploring a return to the North American market, with routes to Vancouver, Toronto, Los Angeles, and Seattle under consideration.
Impact on Tourism and Economy
Sun expressed hope that Gold Coast would become a popular destination for travelers from both Hong Kong and mainland China. “They will be able to enjoy the beautiful weather, stunning coastline, and exciting activities that Queensland has to offer,” he said, emphasizing the strengthening of ties between the regions.
Queensland Airports Limited Chief Executive Officer Amelia Evans reassured that reconnecting to Hong Kong marks a positive step in their international recovery journey, noting that China has been a vital visitor market. “China has always been a critical visitor market for Gold Coast and Queensland broadly,” she remarked.
Queensland Minister for Tourism and Sport, Michael Healy, added that this new route will reconnect Gold Coast Airport with Hong Kong for the first time in six years, providing better access to Southeast Queensland’s holiday offerings for Asian visitors.
Significantly, Hong Kong Airlines’ decision aligns with efforts by local carriers to expand their destinations amidst growing competition. Cathay Pacific Airways’ budget arm, HK Express, has also announced new routes, enhancing regional travel options.
Moreover, Greater Bay Airlines is increasing its network in Japan with direct flights between Hong Kong and Yonago, set to begin on October 27, running three times a week.
