Search for Missing Yacht Passengers, Including Mike Lynch, Resumes
Search Efforts Intensify for Missing Passengers
Search operations have resumed for the missing UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and five other passengers from a luxury yacht that tragically sank off the coast of Sicily. The Italian fire department, led by spokesperson Luca Cari, reported that divers are conducting intense operations to locate those unaccounted for since Monday’s incident.
Challenges in Locating the Missing
- Divers have begun their operations at around 8:30 AM
- A helicopter and motorboat are aiding the surface search
- Efforts are hampered by obstructing furniture within the yacht
Cari remarked, “The operation is challenging. Diving to 50 meters is complex, as is the restricted space.” The rescues commenced after the yacht, Bayesian, sank to approximately 50-meter depth due to unfavorable weather. Out of the 22 passengers on board, 15 were rescued, but six, including Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, remain missing.
Background on the Incident
Notably, Lynch was aboard to celebrate a recent legal victory and had invited many of his legal team members and their families for the trip. Following the fatal incident, further distress has been compounded by the recent death of Lynch's co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain.
Continued Search Actions
The search operation is set to continue throughout the day as authorities persist in locating the missing persons, including notable individuals such as Jonathan Bloomer, chair of insurance group Hiscox.
