DeepRoute.ai's Major Funding Round

DeepRoute.ai, a Chinese autonomous driving technology firm, has successfully raised US$100 million from a listed carmaker, as announced on Monday. This substantial funding is aimed at enhancing the mass adoption of its innovative systems across vehicles, particularly in the Chinese market.

Ambitious Goals for the Future

The Shenzhen-based startup is set to equip nearly 200,000 cars with its advanced assisted driving system by the end of 2025, significantly increasing from the current 20,000 units. CEO Maxwell Zhou highlighted in a recent interview that the advancing technology can navigate urban traffic much like Tesla's FSD, which is scheduled to enter the Chinese market soon.

  • The first model featuring DeepRoute.ai's technology was launched in August.
  • Two additional models, including one under the renowned smart brand with Geely and Mercedes-Benz, are expected to be delivered this year.

Revenue Generation and Market Positioning

DeepRoute.ai plans to generate revenue by collecting technology licensing fees for each car equipped with their systems, while also gathering crucial data for further development of their AI technology, enhancing its capability to manage more complex traffic scenarios.

Ongoing Competition in the Autonomous Driving Space

The competition among carmakers to offer superior autonomous driving features has intensified due to aggressive pricing strategies and the escalating price war in the world’s largest auto market. With Tesla developing its FSD for China, analysts predict a heightened pace of evolution for all competitors.
The CEO acknowledged Tesla’s role as a trailblazer, yet noted that adapting to the Chinese market is essential due to the intricate traffic conditions comprising pedestrians and numerous scooters.

Global Opportunities Ahead

Looking forward, Zhou expressed interest in expanding to regions like Southeast Asia and Europe, anticipating significant demand for advanced autonomous driving technology in 2027 and 2028.
Founded in 2019, DeepRoute.ai distinguished itself by developing its systems without relying on expensive high-definition maps, which has offered it a remarkable cost advantage, potentially enabling the production of smart EVs priced around 150,000 yuan (about US$21,000) in China.
