China Trade and Electric Vehicles Shine at Canton Fair

Since the doors opened on Tuesday for the autumn edition of the Canton Fair, China’s largest trade exhibition, i>the booths for exporters in the new energy sector have emerged as star attractions. Organisers reported over 147,000 overseas buyers registered so far, with many eagerly exploring the displays for new energy vehicles (EVs) and other green technologies.

Despite recent high tariffs imposed by the United States, EU, and Canada, international attendees are showing keen interest in the competitively priced Chinese models. This year’s fair, taking place in Guangzhou, has attracted a diverse array of global buyers looking to capitalize on China’s advancements in smart mobility.

Tariff Tensions Loom Over Trade Opportunities

  • European and American buyers are concerned about the implications of tariffs.
  • As of October 4, the EU voted for tariffs of up to 35.3% on Chinese EVs.
  • Global participants express both admiration and frustration regarding tariff impacts.

As per Arno, a buyer from the Netherlands, China's EVs hold promise in the European market due to their attractive pricing. Despite this, the tariffs threaten to curtail sales momentum as negotiations between China and the EU linger. Sveta Zhang from Shandong Topan Automobile remarked on the dual nature of interest from buyers — excitement for the models, paired with concerns over their pricier future due to tariffs.

Expanding Horizons Beyond Traditional Markets

In contrast, solar panel exporters face a different scenario, confronting oversupply issues that have led to quieter booths compared to their EV counterparts. Alan Lan from Nuuko Power noted a decreasing number of buyers from traditional sources, prompting a shift in focus towards higher-demand markets such as South America.

While tariffs may pose challenges, several manufacturers remain optimistic, promising to share cost burdens to maintain competitiveness. The Canton Fair thus serves not only as a venue for showcasing products but also as a barometer for the evolving landscape of China's trade and manufacturing sectors amidst global trade adjustments.
