Impact of Hurricanes on Gas Prices

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – Back-to-back hurricanes put the brakes on the gas price fall, but only slightly.

AAA of Western and Central New York released its latest gas prices for the region on Monday morning. The average cost of a gallon of gas in Watertown shot up 5 cents to $3.22 per gallon. The average cost is a composite of gas prices from around the region. The national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $3.20 as of Sunday, Oct. 13, which is up three cents from last Monday. A year ago, the price was $3.61.

State and National Averages

• New York State average: $3.24, up two cents from last Monday (Last year: $3.82)
• National average for diesel: $3.60, up three cents from last Monday
• New York average for diesel: $3.93, no change from last Monday

For electric vehicle (EV) users, the national and state averages for L2 commercial electricity remain steady. The national average for a kilowatt of electricity at an L2 commercial charging station sits at 35 cents. An estimated 1.2 million AAA members live in households with one or more electric vehicles.

Hurricane Milton affected gas demand in areas with destroyed infrastructure, flooded roads, and power outages, but did not severely impact gasoline supply. While tensions in the Middle East persist, oil prices this morning are parked in the mid-to-high 70s per barrel. According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gas demand surged over the last week while total domestic stocks plunged. That drop is likely short-lived, as gasoline production increased during that period. The arrival of cheaper winter-blend gasoline soon will also take pressure off pump prices.
