Chain Snatching Incident - A Fabricated Story

Nagpur: A 27-year-old man, burdened by huge debts, fabricated a tale that he was robbed by chain snatchers to explain the disappearance of a gold chain, which he had in fact pawned at a bullion trader to pay off some loans.

The investigation by crime branch unraveled the truth, revealing that the alleged chain snatching incident was nothing but a figment of his imagination.

The False Report

Police said Pranav Kanhere, a resident of Bhavsar Square, is engaged in the furniture business. He had accumulated substantial debts from multiple creditors, leaving him in a precarious financial situation.

  • In a desperate attempt to settle his obligations, Kanhere pledged his gold chain at a trusted bullion trader, securing a sum of ₹90,000.
  • Upon returning home, his family members asked about the whereabouts of his gold chain.

Alarmed by the incident, Kanhere's family accompanied him to the Ganeshpeth police station.

Investigation Unfolds

The crime branch initiated a parallel investigation, examining CCTV footage from the alleged crime scene, which yielded no evidence supporting Kanhere's claims.

  1. Investigators interrogated him, prompting his inability to provide satisfactory responses about the robbers.
  2. When questioned about the weight of the stolen gold chain, Kanhere confidently stated that it was 12.5 grams, raising suspicions among officers.

Under intense questioning, he confessed to fabricating the entire story.

Future Actions

The crime branch subsequently handed Kanhere over to Ganeshpeth police for further investigation. Police inspector Machhindra Pandit is currently overseeing the case. PSI Malhari Doifode explained, “Since the complainant has filed a false complaint, we will present the case summary before the court.”
