Ethereum (ETH) News: Anticipated Split of the Pectra Upgrade

Understanding the Ethereum Pectra Upgrade

The Ethereum Pectra upgrade is on the horizon and anticipated to be a game-changer for the network. Recently, Tim Beiko of the Ethereum Foundation confirmed that the upgrade may be split into two separate hard forks due to its extensive nature.

Key Features of Ethereum's Planned Pectra Upgrade

On September 13, researcher Christine Kim from Galaxy Digital highlighted on X that the upgrade could encompass over 20 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), with additional updates still in evaluation. The launch of the first phase is eyed for February 2025.

  • EIP 7702: Will allow Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs) to function as smart contract wallets, enhancing security and user experience.
  • EIP 7251: Focuses on validating deposits on-chain.
  • EIP 6110: Aims to enhance overall network performance.

Second Phase Enhancements

The second phase will look to implement the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) Object Format (EOF) and the PeerDAS data availability solution.

  1. EOF: Introduces an opt-in container system to optimize EVM code, a significant evolution for Ethereum.
  2. PeerDAS: Aims to bolster data availability and scalability, strengthening network resilience.

If the Pectra 1 upgrade rolls out in early 2025, additional EIPs that were initially discarded might be revisited, paving the way for an even more robust Ethereum network.
